Craig Thomson, the Trade Development Manager, invited to the King’s Garden Party

Just days before the King’s Coronation, around 8,000 esteemed guests were invited to Buckingham Palace for Cream Tea. The Sovereign traditionally holds four summer garden parties each year and attendees are nominated following commendable public service. In recognition of his outstanding devotion to the Air Cadets, Craig and his partner were invited to the Palace’s first party of the season.

Having volunteered since 2007, Craig has spent 17 years leading the 54 (Eastbourne) Squadron Air Training Corps. Now a Flight Lieutenant and Commanding Officer of the 54 (Eastbourne) Squadron, he works with 12 other staff volunteers to lead 80 young Cadets. Likening it to a full-time job, Craig’s role is one of dedication and generosity: leading three-hour parades twice a week and often spending weekends doing community work.

As a nationwide organisation, the Air Cadets is very forward-thinking and inclusive. With a mixed-gender and mixed-ability squadron, Craig’s group is open to any young person with an interest and passion. Home to a few success stories – one of its former female cadets now working in Air Force Intelligence – Craig is passionate about inspiring change. From the little things such as teaching life skills like how to keep a clean uniform and polished shoes, to the bigger task of identifying what they want to do post-cadets, the 54 (Eastbourne) Squadron Air Training Corps is rooted in giving opportunities to young people.

Driven by passion, Craig gets great fulfilment out of helping young people. Inspired by the Air Force’s acronym – Respect, Integrity, Service, Excellence – he hopes to guide young people through their life by helping to instil and boost self-belief and self-discipline.

Congratulations to Craig for being recognised by the Sovereign and thank you for your exceptional continued work and dedication to the Air Cadets.
